The Huang An House |
The discussion on Qing’s architecture should not leave out the Huang An House, which was built by someone named Gu Luanzhi within the Xiao Ying Alley during the reign of Emperor Dao Guang. When the Tai Ping insurgent army took Hangzhou in 1861, General Chen Binwen made the house his commanding post. As General Chen was revered as Ting Wang, it was thus called by locals the Ting Wang House. Late Chairman Mao in 1950s visited the house when he had an inspection tour of the Xiao Ying Alley. Today, this century-old house is a retirement home.
