Elegance and Vulgarity – Jizhou Kilns Porcelain Exhibition

The Jizhou kilns at Yonghe town, Jiangxi province, were an important southern center of porcelain manufacture in the Song period. Jizhou produced qingbai (“bluish-white”) porcelain, black porcelain, and painted porcelain, being especially famous for the last two.
Black Jizhou porcelain was decorated with highly distinctive designs executed by appliqué, carving, painting, and splashing the glaze. Its leaf pattern and paper cut decoration are particularly striking. Its painted porcelain by and large imitates Cizhou ware but has a rather different look, as no white slip was used.
